For the Love of Learning!
Learning is occuring all the time in our classroom! Whether it is how to germinate a seed for a Fall harvest, or understanding the effect of Osceola's heroic actions against the Greedy takeover of Seminole Land. Below is a snapshot of our curriculum for the first and second quarter.
1st Quarter:
The students were busy in Math mastering their skills in Rounding, Multiplication tables, Division, and Word problems. Mrs. Tauvell always makes math an adventure with her 'Rodeoth a Round-up' and 'multiplication jingles'.
Our reading curriculum focused on interpreting information texts including short passages, personal accounts of historic events, and scientific texts. We developed our summary skills, and learned how to make reasonable inferences from texts. We also began to elevate our writing by including valid evidence from a text to support our summaries and inferences. We also started a rigorous vocabulary curriculum with the assistance of Wordly Wise.
Science was exciting with the completion of our comprehensive study on Matter. Hands-on science labs helped students understand and apply the Law of Conservation of Mass. Our beautiful campus lent itself to many nature walks for data collection and graphing.
Social Studies inclueded learning about landforms and mapping. We also completed a Historical Figure in Florida study where students had the oppurtunity to create life-sized replications of their reaserched figure. IN addition, the students wrote a speech which was recorded and turned into a QR code. The codes were attached to their life-size creation for parents to scan and hear the fabulous speeches they recited.
2nd Quarter:
Our students have been busy with long division and multiplication this quarter! Mrs. Tauvell teachers both Common Core steps for solving as well as traditional arithmitic in her lessons. This allows students to have multiple strategies in their 'pocket' when attacking the more rigorous content.
We completed a fascinating study on Chris VanAllsburg this quarter which included many oppurtunities for critical thinking, writing, imaginitive inferences, and socratic discussion. In addition, the students, completing a short unit study on Theme. We explored themes in literature, plays, and poems. The students began to learn how to write for a rubric which will be especially helpful as we prepare for the writing FSA in the spring.
With a classroom this Energetic there was not a dull moment while completing our study of Energy forms, Motion, and Force. What better way to understand the distribution of force and balanced for than with a structured 'tug-o-war' lab.
We explored our Local, State, and Federal Goverment in Social Studies this quarter with the election occuring in the heart of the nine week block. We also learned about personal finance. The students learned about to plan a fundrasier and how to calculate revenue vs. profit and the importance of budgeting. It is never to early for financial literacy!
